What to know
Shukkeien (縮景園) translates to "shrunken-scenery garden," a fitting name for this miniature landscape. Valleys, mountains, and forests are recreated in small scale through careful cultivation, mimicking natural formations and scenic views.
The garden dates back to 1620, built shortly after Hiroshima Castle. It embodies traditional Japanese garden aesthetics, with several tea houses around the main pond offering ideal vantage points to admire the scenery.
A winding path encircles the central pond, passing through all the miniaturized landscapes. Following this route is the best way to experience Shukkeien.
Shukkeien is a 15-minute walk from Hiroshima Station.
Alternatively, take the Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Bus (Meipuru-pu) from Hiroshima Station, which reaches the garden in about four minutes.
The garden is a short walk from the "Shukkeien-mae" stop on tram line 9. From Hiroshima Station, take tram line 1, 2, or 6 to Hacchobori, then transfer to line 9. The journey takes about 15 minutes and costs 240 yen.
