Visitor guide for Hiroshima

What to know

Hiroshima's lively downtown revolves around Hondori Street, a pedestrian-only arcade packed with shops and restaurants. It begins near the Peace Park and stretches east for about half a kilometer. Running parallel is Aioi Street (Aioidori), the main thoroughfare for cars and trams, lined with large department stores for additional shopping.

While in the downtown area, visitors should try Hiroshima's signature dish: Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Many restaurants along Hondori and Aioi streets serve this local specialty, but the best place to find it is Okonomimura.

Often called Okonomiyaki Village, Okonomimura is a small district just south of the eastern end of Hondori. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to okonomiyaki, with numerous restaurants to choose from—a convenient spot to take a break and grab a meal in the city center.

Hiroshima's downtown is a five-minute tram ride (lines 1, 2, or 6) or a 20-minute walk west of Hiroshima Station. Okonomimura and the eastern end of Hondori are best reached from Hacchobori tram stop. The area is also served by the Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Bus (Meipuru-pu).
