What to know
The Danjiri Museum (だんじり会館, Danjiri Kaikan) introduces the Ueno Tenjin Festival, held annually from October 23 to 25. Upon entering, visitors see a large circular glass case displaying three festival floats (danjiri) and life-sized figures that recreate the festival atmosphere. Large screens periodically show a film about the culture and nature of Iga Ueno.
A second exhibition room features more figures in demon (oni) costumes forming a procession called Oni-gyoretsu, depicting a typical street scene from the Ueno Tenjin Festival parade. The demon masks have various expressions, and during the festival, actors playing demons interact with the audience by portraying different characters according to the masks.
The museum is also one of the few places in town where tourists can rent ninja costumes for a small fee and wear them while sightseeing or take photos. Popular with children, the ninja costume service is available from 10:00 to 15:00.
The Danjiri Museum is a five-minute walk northeast of Uenoshi Station.
