What to know
Ueno Castle (Iga Uenojō) was first built in the late 1500s and later expanded, serving as the residence of local feudal lords during the Edo Period (1603–1868). The original tower was destroyed by a storm less than 50 years after its completion, and it wasn't until 1935 that a local benefactor funded its reconstruction.
Unlike many Japanese castles rebuilt with concrete in the 20th century, Ueno Castle was reconstructed entirely from wood, preserving a beautiful, authentic appearance and atmosphere both inside and out. The stone walls on the western side are the tallest of any Japanese castle, reaching an impressive 30 meters (98 feet).
Ueno Castle is located a five to ten minute walk north of Uenoshi Station.
