Mount Haruna

Visitor guide for Mount Haruna (Harunasan) and the activities that can be done in its environs.

What to know

Mount Haruna (榛名山, Harunasan) is a 1449-meter dormant volcano in Gunma Prefecture. Together with Mount Myogi and Mount Akagi, it forms the "Three Famous Mountains of Gunma." At the summit, a large caldera and crater lake host a hot spring town and various sports facilities. Ikaho Onsen lies halfway up the eastern slopes.

At the center of the caldera stands Haruna Fuji, a perfectly symmetrical cone-shaped peak named for its resemblance to Mount Fuji. A ropeway ascends to the top, offering panoramic views. Several hiking trails lead down from the peak and around the caldera.

The crater lake, Lake Haruna, is popular for boating and fishing. Rowboats and swan-shaped pedal boats rent for about 1500 yen per 30 minutes. In winter, ice fishing for local wakasagi fish is popular; the fish are served year-round at lakeside restaurants.

Buses run every 1-2 hours between Ikaho Bus Terminal and Mount Haruna. The one-way trip takes about 25 minutes and costs 840 yen.

Mount Haruna is also accessible by direct bus from Takasaki Station. The trip takes about 90 minutes and costs 1420 yen, with roughly one bus per hour.
