What to know
Ikaho Onsen (伊香保温泉) is a hot spring town on the eastern slopes of Mount Haruna. Its reddish-brown, iron-rich thermal waters make it one of Gunma Prefecture's four most famous hot spring resorts, alongside Kusatsu, Minakami, and Shima Onsen.
The atmospheric old town centers on a 300-meter stone staircase lined with ryokan, retro game arcades, and shops. It retains a nostalgic Showa Period (1926-1989) ambiance.
A few kilometers away, Mizusawa Kannon temple is popular for the udon noodles sold at restaurants along its approach. Mount Haruna, with its beautiful caldera lake, is easily combined with a visit to Ikaho.
