Izu Shaboten Zoo

Visitor guide for Izu Shaboten Zoo, a botanical and zoological garden.

What to know

Izu Shaboten Zoo (伊豆シャボテン動物公園, Izu Shaboten Dōbutsukōen, "Izu Cactus Zoo") is a unique blend of botanical garden and zoo. It sits beside the striking, grass-covered Mount Omuro, a volcanic cone near central Ito on the Izu Peninsula.

The park's greenhouses display over 1,000 cactus varieties from around the world, while the zoo houses birds, rodents, and monkeys.

To get there, take a bus from Ito Station (40 minutes, 880 yen one way, 2 buses/hour) or Izu Kogen Station (20 minutes, 430 yen one way, every 1-2 hours) bound for Shaboten Koen (シャボテン公園). Get off at the final stop, then walk a short distance uphill to the park.

Tokai Bus offers two discount passes for Ito: a 1-day pass for 1250 yen covering Izu Kogen and the Jogasaki Coast, and a 2-day pass for 1800 yen that also includes central Ito. The trip from Izu Kogen Station is fully covered by both passes, but the trip from Ito Station is only covered by the 2-day pass. Passes can be purchased at Izu Kogen Station and Ito Station, respectively.
