What to know
The Izu Peninsula (Izu HantÅ) is a popular resort area known for its hot springs, stunning coastlines, beaches, mild climate, and scenic mountains. Located about 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, it's a favorite weekend escape with excellent train connections. Mount Fuji, just 50 kilometers north, can be seen from the western coast.
The eastern coast is more developed, with larger cities like Atami, Ito, and Shimoda offering beaches and hot springs. The southern and western coasts are less developed, featuring rugged shorelines best seen at Irozaki and Dogashima.
