What to know
Perched on the hills above Atami, the MOA Museum of Art (MOA美術館) offers a breathtaking setting and a superb collection of Japanese and East Asian art. Opened in 1982 by the Mokichi Okada Association (MOA), the museum showcases the passion of Okada Mokichi (1882–1955), an avid art collector who also founded the Hakone Museum of Art.
The museum's exhibits include three national treasures and numerous important cultural properties, spanning paintings, calligraphy, sculptures, and crafts. Beyond the galleries, visitors can explore a Japanese-style garden with tea houses and a noh theater.
The MOA Museum of Art is located in Atami on the northeastern coast of the Izu Peninsula. From Atami Station, take a bus bound for MOA Bijutsukan (MOA美術館) and get off at the final stop (10 minutes, 200 yen one way, frequent departures; covered by the Atami 1-Day Pass).
