Cape Irozaki

Visitor guide for Cape Irozaki on the breathtaking south coast of the Izu Peninsula.

What to know

Cape Irozaki (石廊崎, Irōzaki) marks the southernmost point of the Izu Peninsula. At the cape, you'll find the Irozaki Lighthouse and Iro Shrine, the latter built into the rocks at the very tip and offering stunning views of the rugged coastline.

The coast around Cape Irozaki is wild and largely untouched. You can explore it on a 25-minute sightseeing cruise. Other scenic capes and some of the peninsula's best beaches line the southern shore.

These southern capes and beaches are less touristy but still charming. Cape Tarai, about eight kilometers east of Cape Irozaki, features a stony beach and forest nature trails.

Another three kilometers east lies Toji, a tiny beach town with attractions like the heart-shaped Ryugu Sea Cave (visible from above) and a natural sand ski slope nearby. Visitors can rent boards from local lodgings to slide down the sandy slope.

Tokai Bus runs hourly services from Izukyu-Shimoda Station to Cape Irozaki. Take a bus bound for Irozaki Oceanpark (石廊崎オーシャンパーク) and alight at the final stop (45 minutes, 1190 yen one way). From there, it's a short walk to the lighthouse and cape.

Cape Tarai is about a 30-minute walk east of the Kyukamura (休暇村) bus stop, reachable in about 25 minutes from Izukyu-Shimoda Station on the same bus line (740 yen one way).
