What to know
Mount Omuro (大室山, Ōmuroyama) is a strikingly shaped volcanic cone near the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula, south of central Ito City. Resembling a giant inverted rice bowl, its beautiful silhouette is visible from many spots in the Izu Kogen area. The mountain stands about 580 meters tall and features a crater roughly 300 meters in diameter, which takes 15 to 30 minutes to walk around.
To protect the environment, visitors must take a chairlift to the summit (hiking is not allowed). Once at the top, enjoy 360-degree panoramic views that, on clear days, include Mount Fuji and Oshima Island. For the adventurous, try archery inside the crater or paraglide down the slopes. The Izu Shaboten Zoo is located near the base of Mount Omuro.
Take a bus bound for Shaboten Koen (シャボテン公園) from Ito Station (about 40 minutes, 880 yen one way, 2 buses/hour) or Izu Kogen Station (about 20 minutes, 430 yen one way, every 1-2 hours) and get off at the final stop. The chairlift to the top departs right next to the bus stop.
Tokai Bus offers two discount passes for Ito: a 1-day pass for 1250 yen covering Izu Kogen and the Jogasaki Coast, and a 2-day pass for 1800 yen that also includes central Ito. The trip to Mount Omuro from Izu Kogen Station is fully covered by both passes, but the trip from Ito Station is only covered by the 2-day pass. Passes can be purchased at Izu Kogen Station and Ito Station, respectively.
