What to know
Shirahama Beach (白浜) stretches 800 meters along the coast and is one of the Izu Peninsula's most beloved attractions. Visitors flock here for sun, sand, and relatively good surfing conditions. The beach lies about five kilometers east of Izukyu-Shimoda Station, running parallel to the main road. Along the shore stands Shirahama Jinja, a charming Shinto shrine.
Along the main road, shops and convenience stores rent beach gear and sell snacks. Paid showers are available at nearby shops. The official swimming season runs from mid-July through August, but if the weather cooperates, swimming can be enjoyable from late May through September.
Shirahama Beach is about four kilometers from central Shimoda. From Izukyu-Shimoda Station, take a bus bound for Itadoichiki (板戸一色) and get off at Shirahama Kaigan (白浜海岸). The ride takes 10 minutes, costs 400 yen one way, and runs hourly.
