What to know
Jufukuji Temple (寿福寺) ranks third among Kamakura's five great Zen temples. It belongs to the Kenchoji school of the Rinzai sect.
Jufukuji was founded on the orders of Minamoto Masako, wife of Minamoto Yoritomo, after her husband's death. The founding priest was Eisai, who introduced Zen Buddhism to Japan. While the temple's photogenic approach path is often photographed, the temple itself is not regularly open to the public.
Jufukuji is a ten-minute walk north of Kamakura Station, just west of the railway tracks. There is no nearby bus stop.
