What to know
Karuizawa (軽井沢) is a stylish mountain resort nestled at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture. Sitting at about 1000 meters above sea level, the town offers a refreshing escape from the summer heat. Western expatriates first promoted it as a resort in the late 1800s, and today many wealthy city dwellers keep a second home here. Thanks to the Hokuriku Shinkansen, it's just over an hour from Tokyo.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy tennis, hiking, cycling, and golf in summer, plus skiing and ice skating in winter. Karuizawa also boasts excellent shopping and lies along Japan's Romantic Road. The autumn foliage is typically at its best from mid-October to early November each year.
