Onioshidashi Park

Visitor guide for Onioshidashi Park near Karuizawa, a park formed by volcanic rocks deposited after an eruption of Mount Asama.

What to know

Onioshidashi Park (鬼押出し園, Onioshidashien) showcases a striking volcanic rock landscape, giving it a rugged and otherworldly feel. The park was formed by volcanic debris from the major 1783 eruption of Mount Asama. Though located across the prefectural border in Gunma Prefecture, it is often visited together with Karuizawa.

In addition to exploring the curiously shaped volcanic rocks, Onioshidashi Park offers panoramic views of nearby towns and, on clear days, Mount Asama. At the park's center stands a temple dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.

Seibu buses run roughly every hour between Karuizawa Station, Naka-Karuizawa Station, and Onioshidashi Park. The one-way trip from Karuizawa Station takes 35 minutes and costs 1300 yen.
