Candy Alley

Visitor guide for the Kashiya Yokocho, a candy shopping alley in Kawagoe.

What to know

Candy Alley (Kashiya Yokochō) is a charming shopping street just off the Warehouse District, lined with shops selling traditional Japanese sweets and cakes. The alley gets its name from the many candy stores that line it. You'll find treats like rice crackers, karinto (deep-fried cookies coated in sugar), ice cream, and cakes made from red bean paste and sweet potatoes. There are also small toys and accessories that make great souvenirs.

After the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, Tokyo faced a severe shortage of Japanese sweets, leading to a surge in orders for the candy stores in Kashiya Yokocho. At its peak in the early Showa period, there were over 70 such stores. Today, about 20 remain, offering a variety of delights. Candy Alley is a wonderful place to sample traditional Japanese sweets while soaking up the nostalgic atmosphere of decades past.

Candy Alley is located near the northern end of the Warehouse District, close to the festival museum. It's about a 15-20 minute walk from Hon-Kawagoe Station.
