Visitor guide for the Kawagoe City Museum.

What to know

The Kawagoe City Museum (川越市立博物館, Kawagoe Shiritsu Hakubutsukan) offers visitors an engaging look into the history and culture of Kawagoe. Its exhibits span from ancient times to the modern era, using excavated relics, preserved artifacts, models, and life-sized replicas to take you on a journey through the city's evolution.

A highlight is the large model demonstrating the kurazukuri construction method, showing the various layers that make up the walls of traditional warehouse buildings. Other models include a geographical representation of the former castle town, illustrating how Kawagoe developed over the centuries.

From around the 17th century, ties between Kawagoe and Edo (present-day Tokyo) deepened, and much of Kawagoe's cultural heritage was influenced by Edo culture. Here, visitors can learn how Kawagoe earned its nickname "Little Edo."

Adjacent to the City Museum is the City Art Museum (川越市立美術館, Kawagoe Shiritsu Bijutsukan), which displays works primarily by artists from or connected to the city. The permanent collection focuses on contemporary art, while special exhibitions—held about four times a year—showcase a variety of artistic styles.

The museum is a ten-minute walk from the Warehouse District or Kitain Temple, and just across the street from Honmaru Goten.
