Kinosaki Onsen Town

Visitor guide for the hot spring town of Kinosaki Onsen.

What to know

In many hot spring resort towns, large ryokan offer everything from dining and entertainment to souvenir shops within their own premises. While convenient for guests, this often leaves the surrounding streets empty and local businesses struggling to survive.

Kinosaki has avoided this pitfall by adopting a policy of shared resources and controlled development. Ryokan encourage guests to explore the walkable town, support local shops, and provide free admission tickets to the public baths.

As a result, the streets are lively, especially in the early evening when visitors in yukata stroll between baths, stopping at local shops for ice cream or trying their hand at nostalgic games like vintage pachinko, smart ball, and target shooting at old-fashioned arcades.

During the day, there are plenty of attractions beyond bathing. In the town center, the Bungeikan museum celebrates Kinosaki's literary heritage and is a stop on the literary monument walking tour. To the north, a ropeway takes you halfway up the mountain to Onsenji Temple, with the option to continue to the summit viewpoint.

Further afield, you'll find Kinosaki Marine World, an aquarium park, and Konotori no Sato, an oriental stork sanctuary.

Kinosaki is compact and easily explored on foot.
