What to know
Ebino Kogen (えびの高原, Ebino Kōgen) is a small town nestled in the Kirishima Mountains, just inside Miyazaki Prefecture's borders. The name means "shrimp highlands," inspired by the late-summer pampas grass that takes on a pinkish hue from iron in the soil, making the fields look like shrimp.
Surrounded by stunning landscapes, famous peaks, and popular hiking trails, Ebino Kogen draws many visitors. Yet the town itself remains small, with just two hotels, a campground, and a visitor center.
A popular hike starts at the visitor center and loops around Rokkannonmi Pond, taking about two easy hours with great views of the surrounding mountains and highlands. About 30 minutes in, a one-hour detour leads around Byakushi Pond.
Mount Karakuni, the highest peak in Kirishima, overlooks Ebino Kogen and is another popular day hike. The steep ascent to the summit takes about two hours. It is also part of Kirishima's spectacular 12-kilometer ridge trail, which runs from Ebino Kogen over several volcanic peaks to Mount Takachiho-no-mine at the other end of the national park.
Ebino Kogen is best reached by rental car, as public transport is infrequent. Two to three buses per day run between Maruo Onsen and Ebino Kogen (30 minutes, 500 yen one way).
Currently, no public transport is available from the Miyazaki side to Ebino Kogen. Buses from Kobayashi and Miyazaki City were discontinued due to road closures caused by volcanic activity.
