Kawachi Fujien Wisteria Garden

Visitor guide for the spectacular Kawachi Fujien Wisteria Garden in Kitakyushu City.

What to know

Kawachi Wisteria Garden (河内藤園, Kawachi Fujien) is a private garden nestled in the wooded hills south of central Kitakyushu, renowned for its breathtaking wisteria displays. The garden opens seasonally during the wisteria blooming period, typically peaking from late April to early May, and again in autumn for the maple leaf season.

The garden's main highlights are two roughly 100-meter-long tunnels formed by wisteria trees in various colors, from white to deep purple. There is also a collection of large wisteria trees that create a vast canopy of drooping blossoms. A viewpoint at the top of the hillside offers lovely views over the sea of flowers and the surrounding valley, which is also known for its bamboo groves.

Kawachi Wisteria Garden has become extremely popular in recent years, drawing large crowds of domestic and international visitors during the wisteria season, which often coincides with the busy Golden Week holiday period. To manage congestion, advance reservations are required for entry during the spring peak season.

Despite its popularity, the garden is not well-served by public transportation. A shuttle bus from Yahata Station used to operate but has been discontinued in recent years.

Free parking is available near the garden entrance. Rental car outlets can be found around Kokura and Kurosaki stations.

Nishitetsu bus number 56 runs approximately once per hour from Space-World Station to Kamishigeta (上重田), the final stop on the line (25 minutes, 320 yen one way). From the bus stop, it is a 45-55 minute walk to the garden.
