What to know
Kitakyushu (北九州, Kitakyūshū, meaning "North Kyushu") is the northernmost city on Kyushu island and has long been a vital crossroads for land and sea travel. Serving as the gateway between Honshu and Kyushu, it also functions as a key international port. The city was established in 1963 through the merger of five independent municipalities: Kokura, Moji, Yahata, Tobata, and Wakamatsu. Today, it remains a major industrial center, playing a significant role in Japan's manufacturing sector.
During the Meiji Period (1868–1912), the government recognized Kitakyushu's strategic location and rapidly developed its port facilities and railway infrastructure, spurring commercial and industrial growth. Thanks to the preservation of numerous historic buildings from that era, visitors can still experience the nostalgic atmosphere of old Moji Port.
