Yawata Steel Works

Visitor guide for the Yawata Steel Works in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture.

What to know

Kitakyushu sits at a strategic crossroads of land and sea routes, making it one of Japan's leading industrial hubs and a center for domestic and international trade. The city hosts a wide range of industries, and visitors will notice the many mills, factories, and refineries lining the developed coastline.

Kitakyushu's rapid industrialization took off during the Meiji Period. Thanks to its important port and proximity to a highly productive coal mine, the city was chosen as the location for the state-run Yawata Steel Works (八幡製鐵所, Yahata Seitetsusho), Japan's first modern steel mill. The mill was urgently needed to meet the country's demand for metal for the growing shipbuilding, railway, construction, and armaments industries. At its peak, it produced over 90% of the nation's steel. The mill later passed into private hands but remains operational today. Several historic Meiji-era buildings have been preserved on the site, including the former head office, forge, and repair shop, which were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in summer 2015 as part of the Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution. Because the mill is still active, visitors cannot approach or photograph these historic structures directly, but a special viewing platform has been set up about 200 meters away for distant observation. Outside the current steel mill stands the former Higashida Daiichi Blast Furnace (currently closed to the public indefinitely due to security concerns), originally built in 1901 and operated for about 70 years. Towering 30 meters high, the furnace has been repaired and upgraded multiple times over the decades. Although not a World Heritage site, this well-preserved furnace is perhaps the most interesting industrial attraction for tourists in the area today, featuring multilingual explanatory boards about the steelmaking process.

The former Yawata Steel Works and Higashida Daiichi Blast Furnace are located near JR Space World Station, west of central Kitakyushu. Take the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Kokura Station (15 minutes, 340 yen) or Fukuoka's Hakata Station (1 hour, 1,300 yen) and get off at JR Space World Station, from where the industrial sites are within walking distance.
