What to know

Tanga Market (旦過市場, Tanga Ichiba) is a covered local market street in Kitakyushu. Known as the "Kitchen of Kitakyushu", the market began in the early 1900s at its current location beside the Kantake River, which allowed boats to easily deliver fresh ingredients. Around 120 shops selling seafood and prepared foods are packed into the relatively small block that makes up the market, including a handful of restaurants.

Most stores are along the market's main street, while quieter side streets lead to dried food stores and shops selling produce and goods. Although Tanga Market is primarily a place for locals to buy groceries, visitors can also enjoy it by dining at a restaurant or picking up prepared foods and fruit. Because the lanes are narrow, visitors should not bring large luggage and should be considerate of others.

Tanga Market is a short walk from Tanga Station (2 minutes from Kokura Station, 100 yen one way) on the Kitakyushu Monorail. Alternatively, it is a ten-minute walk from Kokura Station. How to get to and around Kitakyushu
