Nishizawa Keikoku

Visitor guide for the Nishizawa Valley in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan.

What to know

Nishizawa Keikoku (西沢渓谷), near Kofu, is one of the most scenic valleys in Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. This vast national park spans over 1,250 square kilometers of forested mountains, hills, gorges, and rural towns across Yamanashi, Saitama, Nagano, and Tokyo prefectures.

A hiking trail follows a picturesque mountain stream up the narrow Nishizawa Valley, passing several waterfalls. After about 90 minutes, you reach the highlight: Nanatsugama-Godan-no-Taki, a beautiful five-tiered waterfall. A separate, flatter trail leads back from the waterfall to the bus stop.

The trail can be steep in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended. The valley is especially stunning during the autumn foliage season, which typically peaks in late October and early November.

The trailhead is a one-hour bus ride (900 yen one way, 4 buses per day) from Yamanashishi Station on the frequent JR Chuo Line (15 minutes, 260 yen one way from Kofu). Yamanashishi Station can also be reached from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station by limited express in about 80 minutes (4,000 yen one way) or by local trains in about 2.5 hours (2,420 yen, with at least one transfer).
