Reihokan Museum

Visitor guide for the Reihokan Museum, which displays the cultural and religious treasures of Koyasan.

What to know

The Reihokan Museum (霊宝館, Reihōkan) was built to preserve the religious and cultural treasures of Koyasan. Its entrance hall is modeled after Byodoin Temple in Uji, and it features three exhibition halls for permanent and temporary displays.

The museum holds thousands of religious artworks. The permanent exhibition includes statues, mandalas (paintings depicting metaphysical maps of the cosmos), and various ritual tools and paintings. The highlight is the scroll of the "Reclining Image of Sakyamuni Buddha on His Last Day." A rotating temporary exhibition showcases seasonal selections from the collection.

Located in Koyasan's town center, the Reihokan Museum is a five-minute walk from the Senjuinbashi intersection and just steps from Garan and Kongobuji Temple.
