Kumano Hayatama Taisha

Visitor guide for Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the three Kumano shrines (Kumano Sanzan).

What to know

Kumano Hayatama Taisha (熊野速玉大社) is one of Kumano's three great shrines, alongside Hongu Taisha and Nachi Taisha. It sits in Shingu City on the southeast coast of the Kii Peninsula.

Although the current buildings were rebuilt relatively recently, Hayatama Taisha has occupied the same spot on the banks of the Kumano River since at least the 12th century. Religious artifacts dating back to the 3rd century suggest the area has been a place of worship for much longer. According to an ancient creation myth, the Kumano deities first descended to earth on a rock not far from the shrine.

Because of this divine contact, the rock has been venerated as a sacred object. An ancient tree, estimated to be over 800 years old, stands within the shrine grounds and is also considered holy. These two kami (Shinto deities) highlight the importance of nature worship in the area's origins.

Hayatama Taisha's Treasure Hall displays over a dozen national treasures, including offerings brought by pilgrims along the Kumano Kodo. The collection in this small museum is impressive, with more national treasures than most major museums.

Hayatama Taisha is a 15-minute walk from JR Shingu Station.
