Kurashiki

City with a picturesque, historic canal area

What to know

Kurashiki (倉敷) is a city in Okayama Prefecture, just a short distance from the prefectural capital, Okayama City. It boasts a well-preserved canal district dating back to the Edo Period (1603–1867), when the town was a key hub for rice distribution. The name "Kurashiki" roughly translates to "town of storehouses," a nod to the rice warehouses that once lined the waterways.

Today, many of Kurashiki's former storehouses have been transformed into museums, boutique shops, and cafes. The standout is the Ohara Museum, which houses an impressive collection of works by renowned Western artists. The canal area is just a ten-minute walk from Kurashiki Station.
