What to know
Kushiro (釧路) is a port city in eastern Hokkaido. It is famous for Kushiro Shitsugen, Japan's largest marshland, which is a designated national park. The marsh is home to rare wild Japanese red-crowned cranes (tancho), which can be observed by visitors in winter.
As a major fishing port, Kushiro is naturally known for its fresh seafood, available at local restaurants. A public fish market is a short walk from the station. Although over 50 kilometers inland from central Kushiro, Lake Akan lies within the city's expansive boundaries.
