Kushiro Shitsugen National Park

Visitor guide for Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, a marshland near Kushiro City, famous for Japanese cranes.

What to know

Kushiro Marshland (釧路湿原, Kushiro Shitsugen) in Hokkaido became a national park in 1987 to protect Japan's largest wetland and marsh habitat. This area is the only known home of the endangered Japanese Crane in Japan.

The park lies between Kushiro and Akan National Park, making it a convenient stop when traveling between the two. It receives little snow even in winter, offering year-round bird watching, nature viewing, and walking trails. The cranes attract many photographers throughout the year.

Japanese Cranes (Tancho, meaning "red head") were once thought extinct in Japan due to overhunting and habitat loss. In 1926, about 20 birds were rediscovered in the Kushiro marshes. Thanks to conservation, their population has rebounded to over 1,000.

The cranes are most spectacular when dancing, often in pairs, with graceful dips and jumps. Winter is the best time to see them as they gather at feeding sites. These sites are easiest to reach by car, but public transportation is also possible.

Other ways to experience the marshland include walking trails and canoe or kayak tours along the Kushiro River's distributaries. These activities are available year-round and offer a unique perspective of the park.
