What to know
Kyoto Aquarium (京都水族館, Kyōto Suizokukan) is a modern, well-designed facility, though smaller than Japan's top aquariums. Opened in 2012 in Umekoji Park, it lies about one kilometer west of Kyoto Station. The two-story building is divided into themed zones showcasing a variety of aquatic life.
A highlight is the zone recreating Kyoto's river environments, featuring the Japanese giant salamander. The aquarium also works to preserve rare local aquatic species through breeding programs. Other zones display marine life from around the world, including jellyfish, penguins, and seals. A dolphin stadium hosts several shows daily.
Kyoto Aquarium is located in Umekoji Park, a 15-minute walk west from Kyoto Station or a 5-minute walk from Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station (3 minutes, 150 yen one way from Kyoto Station).
