Kyoto Manga Museum

Visitor guide for the Kyoto International Manga Museum.

What to know

Opened in 2006, the Kyoto International Manga Museum (京都国際マンガミュージアム, Kyōto Kokusai Manga Museum) spans three floors and a basement, with most walls lined with shelves of manga. Browsing this vast collection is one of the museum's main attractions. A small section features foreign and translated manga, but the overwhelming majority is in Japanese.

Beyond its massive collection of Japanese manga, the museum also explores the adoption and development of manga worldwide. Works by international manga artists are showcased, and manga-related events often involve foreign artists.

In addition to its permanent collection, the Manga Museum hosts temporary exhibitions on various themes. The building, formerly an elementary school, retains some relics of its past on display for visitors.

The Kyoto International Manga Museum is a two-minute walk from Karasuma-Oike Station (5 minutes, 220 yen from Kyoto Station via the Karasuma Subway Line).
