Manshuin Temple

Visitor guide for Manshuin Temple, a temple located close to the Shugakuin Imperial Villa.

What to know

Manshuin (曼殊院) is a temple of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism, founded in the 8th century by the revered monk Saicho, the sect's founder. It is located in the Shugakuin area, just one kilometer from the Shugakuin Imperial Villa northeast of Kyoto's city center. The temple is a so-called monzeki temple, meaning it was historically headed by priests of imperial or aristocratic lineage.

The temple houses two rooms—the Large Shoin and Small Shoin—which are considered outstanding early examples of Shoin architecture. This style of architecture and interior design evolved from study rooms during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573). The rooms feature tatami mat floors, removable sliding doors (fusuma), and elements such as a study desk, staggered shelves, and an alcove (tokonoma). This style largely defines what is still understood today as a traditional Japanese-style room.

Manshuin Temple is also renowned for the paintings by leading artists that adorn the sliding doors (fusuma) and folding screens (byobu) in its various rooms. Many rooms are named after their featured paintings, such as the "Peacock Room," "Tiger Room," and "Twilight Room."

The temple's gardens are fine examples of karesansui, where raked gravel is used instead of water. In one of the two gardens, there are two islets in this artistic sea of pebbles, one of which accommodates a 400-year-old pine tree shaped like a crane.

Manshuin is also known for its beautiful autumn colors, which usually peak around late November. The best colors are provided by the maple trees surrounding the temple's outer wall and eastern gate.

Manshuin Temple is located northeast of central Kyoto. It can be reached in a 15-20 minute walk from Shugakuin Station on the Eizan Railways or in a 10-15 minute walk from the Shugakuin Imperial Villa.
