What to know
Arashiyama (嵐山) is a charming, tourist-friendly district on the western edge of Kyoto. Since the Heian Period (794-1185), nobles have been drawn to its natural beauty. The area is especially popular during cherry blossom season and autumn foliage.
The iconic Togetsukyo Bridge is the heart of Arashiyama. Nearby, you'll find shops, restaurants, and attractions like Tenryuji Temple, the famous bamboo groves, and riverboat rentals.
North of the bridge, the area known as Sagano feels more rural and less crowded, with small temples nestled at the foot of wooded hills. While "Arashiyama" strictly refers to the mountains south of the river, the name is commonly used for the entire district.
Renting a bicycle (around 1000 yen near the stations) is a great way to explore Sagano. Cycling through residential areas and fields between temples can be a highlight of your visit. The preserved town area near Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple is also worth seeing.
Arashiyama is at its best (and busiest) in early April and late November, when cherry blossoms and autumn colors peak. In summer, traditional cormorant fishing takes place on the Hozu River for visitors to watch.
The fastest way from Kyoto Station is the JR Sagano Line (also called JR Sanin Line) to Saga-Arashiyama Station. The trip takes 15 minutes and costs 240 yen one way. From the station, it's a 5-10 minute walk to central Arashiyama.
