Visitor guide for Maruyama Park (Maruyama Koen), Kyoto

What to know

Maruyama Park (円山公園, Maruyama Kōen) is a public park adjacent to Yasaka Shrine in the Higashiyama District. During the first half of April, when the cherry trees are in full bloom, the park becomes Kyoto's most popular and crowded spot for cherry blossom viewing parties (hanami). The centerpiece is a tall shidarezakura (weeping cherry tree), which is illuminated at night.

Maruyama Park is accessible by bus from Kyoto Station in about 20 minutes. Take bus number 206 and get off at the Gion bus stop. The park is located just behind Yasaka Shrine.

Alternatively, you can reach the park with a 20+ minute walk from Kiyomizudera through the narrow lanes of the Higashiyama District.
