Visitor guide for Nijo Jinya, a former inn for feudal lords visiting Kyoto.

What to know

Nijo Jinya (二条陣屋, Nijō Jinya) is a historic inn that once accommodated feudal lords (daimyo) during their visits to Kyoto in the feudal era. To ensure the safety of these important guests, the building was equipped with secret passageways, trapdoors, hidden escape routes, and various other security features.

Tours of this intriguing house are conducted only in Japanese. If you do not understand Japanese, you are advised to bring a Japanese-speaking friend or guide (see the link below for a list of volunteer interpreters).

Nijo Jinya is located in a residential area near Nijo Castle. It is marked on the English map distributed by Kyoto Tourist Offices. The nearest subway station is Nijojo-mae Station on the Tozai Line.

Tours are held daily at 11:00, 13:00, and 15:00, last about one hour, and are conducted in Japanese. No tours are held during the New Year holidays. The cost is 1000 yen per person. Reservations must be made online in advance.
