Pontocho

Visitor guide for Pontocho, a traditional nightlife district of Kyoto.

What to know

Pontocho (先斗町, Pontochō) is one of Kyoto's most atmospheric dining areas. This narrow alley runs from Shijo-dori to Sanjo-dori, one block west of the Kamogawa River. It is lined with restaurants on both sides, offering everything from cheap yakitori to traditional and modern Kyoto cuisine, international dishes, and exclusive establishments that require connections and a hefty budget.

Business hours and closing days vary by establishment, but most places are open from around 17:00 to 23:00. Some also serve lunch. Many restaurants provide English menus.

Most restaurants on the eastern side overlook the Kamogawa River. From May to September, many build temporary platforms over the water where diners can eat outdoors. Known as kawayuka, this style of dining was developed to beat the summer heat and is a great way to enjoy traditional Kyoto cuisine while cooling off by the river and soaking up the lively atmosphere. Advance reservations for kawayuka are recommended, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

The nearest bus stop is Shijo Kawaramachi, served by many bus lines including 17 and 205 from Kyoto Station. The closest train stations are Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Line and Shijo Station on the Keihan Line.
