What to know
Toyako Onsen (洞爺湖温泉, Tōyako Onsen) is a bustling hot spring resort town on the shores of Lake Toya, nestled at the base of Mount Usu.
Several large luxury hotels line the lakefront, offering rooms and hot spring baths with stunning lake views. Even non-guests can enjoy some of the baths during the day for a fee of 500 to 1000 yen.
A pleasant promenade with foot baths (ashiyu) runs in front of the hotels, and from May to October, there are nightly fireworks displays. The promenade also serves as the departure point for sightseeing boat cruises on the lake.
Toyako Onsen is the transportation hub of the Lake Toya area. Many bus routes pass through or terminate here, including buses to/from JR Toya Station (20 minutes, 400 yen, about one bus per hour) and buses to/from Sapporo.
By car, Toyako Onsen is a five-minute drive from the Abuta-Toyako Interchange on the Doo Expressway.
