What to know
Mount Usu (有珠山, Usuzan) is an active volcano that has erupted four times in the last century, most recently in the year 2000.
The Usuzan Ropeway takes you close to the volcano's summit. From the upper station's observation deck, you can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Toya and neighboring Showa Shinzan. A short walk leads to another observation deck with views of the ocean and Mount Usu's largest crater, formed during the 1977 eruption.
The ropeway departs from Kazan-Mura, a small village of souvenir shops at the foot of Showa Shinzan. From Toyako Onsen, it is a 10-minute drive or taxi ride (about 2500 yen one way), or a 15-minute bus ride (400 yen one way, nearly hourly). Some buses run directly between Toya Station and the ropeway station (35 minutes, 700 yen one way).
