Visitor guide for the Matsumoto City Museum of Art.

What to know

The Matsumoto City Museum of Art (松本市美術館, Matsumoto-shi Bijutsukan) showcases works by artists connected to the city. Its highlight is the collection of world-renowned Matsumoto-born artist Kusama Yayoi. Born in 1929, Kusama is famous for her bold, colorful pieces, including the iconic Pumpkin sculpture on Naoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture.

The museum displays a range of Kusama's paintings and sculptures in her signature style. Outside the main entrance, a large tulip sculpture installed when the museum opened in 2002 greets visitors. Rotating exhibitions feature other artists in a separate wing. A shop sells art-related souvenirs and goods.

The museum is about a 20-minute walk from both Matsumoto Castle and Matsumoto Station.
