Visitor guide for Nakamachi, Matsumoto

What to know

Just a short stroll from Matsumoto Castle, Nakamachi-dori (中町通り) is a charming stretch of the city center lined with beautifully preserved old buildings. Many are warehouse-style structures (kura) featuring large white-painted walls. This area was home to the city's merchants during the Edo Period, and the architecture reflects that heritage. Today, these buildings house small shops, restaurants, and ryokan.

Running parallel to Nakamachi across the river is "Frog Street," a pedestrian-only lane filled with shops and cafes in small, traditional buildings. The street got its nickname in the Meiji Period after the construction of Yohashira Shrine, for which it serves as the main approach. Businesses sprang up, allowing people to buy items and return home after worshipping. The two acts sound phonetically identical to the word for frog (kaeru) in Japanese, giving the street its colloquial name. A frog statue now stands at the entrance to protect the businesses.

Nakamachi and Frog Street are a five to ten minute walk from Matsumoto Castle and a 15 minute walk from Matsumoto Station.
