Visitor guide for the Matsumoto Timepiece Museum.

What to know

The Matsumoto Timepiece Museum (松本市時計博物館, Matsumoto-shi Tokei Hakubutsukan) is a dedicated museum in Matsumoto showcasing timepieces from Japan and abroad. Spread across three floors, it features a wide variety of watches and clocks, including profession-specific timepieces like train conductor and nurse watches, as well as ornate European and Asian grandfather clocks from centuries past. The collection also includes quirky designer clocks and even sundials.

The first two floors house the permanent collection, which also includes a small display of gramophones and musical records. The third floor hosts temporary exhibitions centered on a specific theme. A notable symbol of the museum is Japan's largest pendulum clock, mounted on its exterior wall.

Matsumoto Timepiece Museum is about a ten-minute walk from Matsumoto Station or Matsumoto Castle.
