Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Travel guide for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a scenic route through the Northern Japanese Alps using several means of transportation.

What to know

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (立山黒部アルペンルート) is a breathtaking journey through the Northern Japan Alps, using a mix of cable cars, electric buses, and a ropeway. Opened in 1971, it links Toyama City in Toyama Prefecture with Omachi Town in Nagano Prefecture. The stretch from Tateyama Station to Ogizawa is off-limits to private cars.

The route operates from April 15 to November 30 and is closed in winter.

Its main draw is the stunning scenery of the Tateyama Mountain Range, part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park. Each season offers different views: in spring, deep snow around Midagahara and Murodo creates a dramatic snow corridor with walls up to 20 meters high. A section near Murodo is open to pedestrians from April 15 to June 25.

Summer and autumn bring alpine flowers (June–August) and vibrant fall foliage. Peak autumn colors appear around Murodo and Daikanbo from late September to early October, then descend to lower elevations by late October to early November.

Murodo, the highest point, has hiking trails for all levels. Other highlights include the single-span Tateyama Ropeway with panoramic views and the 186-meter Kurobe Dam, which is especially impressive during water releases from late June to mid-October.

From mid-June to September, temperatures are mild and rarely too hot. From April to early May and mid-October to November, it's cool and can be chilly on windy days. Summer requires just one layer, while spring and autumn need a sweater. Good walking shoes are recommended for hikes beyond easy trails. Accommodation, including hotels, mountain huts, and campsites, is available along the route, especially around Murodo.
