Oshima Island

Visitor guide for Oshima Island, a small pine-covered island in Matsushima that is open to the public.

What to know

Oshima (雄島) is a small, pine-covered island located near the Matsushima pier. It is connected to the mainland by a short bridge and can be visited free of charge. The island offers pleasant, short walking trails, dotted with several small shrines and scenic viewpoints.

Historically, Oshima served as a retreat for monks, and you can still find decorated meditation caves on the island. The bridge to Oshima was destroyed by the 2011 tsunami but was rebuilt and reopened two years later.

Oshima is a 5-10 minute walk from Matsushima-Kaigan Station or a 15 minute walk from Matsushima Pier.
