Fukuura Island (Fukuurajima)

Visitor guide for Fukuura Island, a small island in Matsushima Bay that is open to the public.

What to know

Fukuura Island (福浦島, Fukuurajima) is one of the few pine-covered islands in Matsushima Bay that visitors can access. A 252-meter-long red bridge leads to the island, costing 200 yen for a round trip. The bridge was damaged by the March 11, 2011 tsunami and later repaired.

The island offers little beyond plants and bay views. It serves as a natural botanical garden with pleasant walking trails. A leisurely stroll along all paths takes about an hour, with nice bay views along the way.

Fukuura Island is a 5-10 minute walk from Matsushima Pier or a 15-20 minute walk from Matsushima-Kaigan Station.
