Asuka no Yu

Visitor guide for the Asuka no Yu, a public bath in Dogo Onsen, Matsuyama City.

What to know

Asuka no Yu (飛鳥乃湯泉) is a public bathhouse in Matsuyama's Dogo Onsen district. Opened in 2017, it sits 150 meters west of the Dogo Onsen Honkan and offers an elegant experience with baths on the first floor and tatami-covered relaxation rooms on the second floor.

The exterior of Asuka no Yu draws inspiration from the ancient Asuka Period (538-710), as Dogo Onsen was mentioned in Japan's oldest historical records dating back to that era. Inside, the gender-separated bathing areas feature stone baths and outdoor baths surrounded by hinoki wood panels.

For an extra fee, guests can enjoy the large tatami communal area on the second floor, where tea and sweets are served. The second floor also offers a few private rooms and a private bath. A rental yukata is provided for second-floor users, and rental towels are included for those using private rooms.

A few steps from Asuka no Yu stands another public bathhouse, Tsubaki no Yu. Opened in 1953 and beloved by locals, Tsubaki no Yu is the most economical bathhouse in Dogo Onsen, offering simple, gender-separated indoor baths.

Asuka no Yu is a three-minute walk from the Dogo Onsen tram terminal.
