What to know
Matsuyama (松山) is the largest city on Shikoku and the capital of Ehime Prefecture. At its heart stands Matsuyamajo, a beautifully preserved original castle. From the hilltop fortress, you can enjoy panoramic views over the city and catch a glimpse of the Seto Inland Sea.
The city is also famous as the setting of Natsume Soseki's beloved novel "Botchan", a staple of Japanese school curriculums. The story vividly depicts Matsuyama during the turbulent Meiji Restoration, helping to make the city a household name across Japan.
Dogo Onsen, frequently mentioned in "Botchan", is one of Matsuyama's top attractions. Located on the northeastern outskirts of the city, it is one of Japan's oldest hot spring resorts.
