What to know
Ozu City (大洲, Ōzu) lies in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku's western coast. It grew as a castle town during the Edo Period (1603–1867). Today, a preserved old town with nostalgic alleys and traditional houses recalls both the Edo and Meiji (1868–1912) eras. The recently reconstructed Ozu Castle stands proudly in the city center as the local icon.
The scenic Hijikawa River flows through Ozu's heart. It is considered one of Japan's three best spots for summer cormorant fishing (ukai), alongside the Nagaragawa River in Gifu and the Mikumagawa River in Oita. Garyu Sanso, a villa blending aesthetics and tranquility, sits just east of the old town on the Hijikawa's banks.
