What to know
Minakami is a popular hot spring destination, home to several famous baths including outdoor baths with stunning natural views. Over a dozen separate hot spring sources are scattered across Minakami's mountains and valleys, each surrounded by resorts with their own unique character.
Centrally located Minakami Onsen is a developed town with many large hotel complexes, while Takaragawa Onsen and Hoshi Onsen are remote, rustic ryokan nestled deep in the mountains. Also worth mentioning are Tanigawa Onsen, a small town attractively situated in a side valley at the foot of Mount Tanigawa, and Sarugakyo Onsen, a hot spring resort town next to Lake Akaya.
The best way to enjoy the hot springs is by staying overnight at one of Minakami's onsen ryokan. Some ryokan also allow day visitors to use their baths, typically for 500 to 1500 yen. Additionally, there are a few public bathhouses open to everyone.
