Yunotsuru Onsen

Visitor guide for Yunotsuru Onsen, a hot spring resort in the mountains of Minamata.

What to know

Yunotsuru Onsen (湯の鶴温泉, meaning "crane of hot water") is a small hot spring village nestled in the mountains near Minamata, still part of Minamata City. Legend says an injured crane discovered the spring. Its waters are reputed to help heal wounds.

This charming, slightly weathered hot spring town stretches a few hundred meters along a central river in a calm, rural setting. About half a dozen ryokan line the street, many welcoming day visitors to their baths for a fee of around 300 to 500 yen.

From Minamata Station, infrequent buses run to Yunotsuru Onsen (35 minutes, 150 yen one way, every 1–3 hours). By car, it's about 20 minutes from central Minamata.
