What to know
Minamata City has transformed itself into an environmental model city after one of Japan's worst pollution disasters (see Minamata Disease). In 1999, it earned ISO certification for its environmental management policies. Key initiatives include a rigorous waste sorting system with over 20 categories, energy conservation, waste reduction, eco-friendly farming and fishing, natural resource protection, and positioning Minamata as a hub for environmental studies.
Minamata Eco Town, just outside the city center, is an industrial park housing various recycling companies. They process used bottles, televisions, air conditioners, refrigerators, tires, used oil, plastics, and sewage. While individual travelers cannot visit the facilities, study groups can arrange tours (see link below).
A taxi from Minamata Station to Eco Town takes about five minutes and costs under 1,000 yen.
